PlayStation Vita Sales Still Slow in Week 1 of 2012

This week’s Japanese hardware sales charts show that the brand new PS Vita has sold only 42,648 units in the last week.  That’s actually less units than the PSP sold (62,746 units to be exact) and considerably less than the 3DS (which moved nearly 200,000 machines).

The compete list of all hardware sales for Japan below put the figure into further perpective:

  1. 3DS – 197,952
  2. PS3 – 67,199
  3. PSP – 62,746
  4. Vita – 42,648
  5. Wii – 33,208
  6. DSi LL – 3,356
  7. Xbox 360 – 2,453
  8. DSi – 2,418
  9. PS2 – 1,659
  10. DS Lite – 28

The PlayStation Vita is at the bottom of the Sony family, but still number 4 in the charts. It’s main competitor, the 3DS, sold more than 4 times the number of units in the same period. Though there is a larger number of titles available for the 3DS currently available.

In terms of software, Mario Kart 7 is way out in the lead with over 100,000 copies sold, followed by Monster Hunter – both on the 3DS.  The only Vita games in the chart are Minna No Golf 6 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss, but neither made the top 20 list.
